Picture the sky as a giant clock, always turning. It’s also wrapped with the band of zodiac signs. As the Earth turns, a new slice of the zodiac is on the eastern horizon. Every 4 minutes, the next degrees of the zodiac is at that eastern horizon point. Whatever point of that clock is on the eastern horizon when you were born, that’s your ascendant, and its sign is your rising sign.
The turning movement means the exact degrees changes about every 4 minutes. That means it goes through all 12 zodiac signs in one day (for most latitudes where most people live, but not near the north pole or south pole).
